So You Think You Can Dance?

Last week, I had the great fortune to attend this summer's first performance of Alvin Ailey Dance Theater at Brooklyn Academy of Music. Firs off, I must say, live dance absolutely, one hundred percent, trumps watching the stuff on television. And wow, can these folks dance! I haven't seen much live dance in my day (perhaps I was scarred by participating in dance recitals as a three- and four-year-old, donning sequined leotards and more makeup in one night than I've applied in all twenty-something years since then, combined). I watched the Fanny Packs and others on America's Best Dance Crew, and marveled at the probably imperfect dance stylings in such classic movies as Step Up and Centerstage; but, modern dance never really caught my fancy.

Alvin Ailey

Alvin Ailey led his group of dancers to their first performance in 1958, and after more than 50 years, his spirit is undoubtedly still alive. Set to a fantastic score of gospel, jazz, spirituals, and more, the choreography tells stories and brings characters to life. What's more, I was nodding my head and tapping my fingers all night long. The costumes were also fantastic, and the few props used were just perfect. I recommend taking in an Alvin Ailey show to dance enthusiasts and skeptics, alike. You won't be disappointed. Check out http://alvinailey.org/ for more information on the group's tour schedule (both within and outside of the U.S.), mission, and incredible history.

Friday Finds 6.11.10

As you may already know, last week we had the opportunity to check out Renegade Craft Fair over in Brooklyn. It was a very cool event with lots of great talent. While I enjoyed looking at everything, I especially liked checking out the illustrators, here's a few of my favorites. We hope you enjoy this week's Renegade inspired segment of Friday Finds, have an awesome day!

DKNG Studios

The first thing I actually noticed about DKNG was that they had some really cool 'Support Your Local Artist' stickers. We like to support local artists so we figured let's take a look, what we found were some very cool illustrations. DKNG had some really sweet music related designs on display (we later found out that they are the resident poster artists for the Troubador out in Hollywood, CA). Here's a quick sample of DKNG's work but please visit their site to see some great art and apparel!

Vahalla Studios

I especially liked the Decemberists and Kings of Leon designs, despite the fact that my sister had to tell me who they are (apparently I've fallen a bit out of touch with music recently). These two designs drew me into Vahalla's booth where we immediately saw many other great designs. Vahalla is a full service design studio so if you're in the Kansas City area and need some help these guys can lend you a hand. Check out Vahalla's site to learn more about the duo and view their work.

Sara Antoinette Martin

I'm not sure how to describe Sara's style but I know that I like it and that when I saw it I immediately thought tattoo art. For those of you who weren't able to see Sara's set up over at Renegade please swing by her site to see some great color & black and white offerings as well as a very cool guy lurking in the toys section.

Featured Artist :: Pause Designs

pause designs

This week's featured artist is Pause Designs!

Pause Designs - Malls suck. Support underground.

Senioritis: Name and location please.
Pause Designs: Ken, Andrew, Eric. St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada.
Senioritis: What's up guys, looks like we have some new friends from north of the border, eh!

Senioritis: For starters, can you tell us a little about Pause?
Pause Designs: We are a streetwear brand out of Southern Ontario, consisting of three artists that met in high school. We specialize in unique limited edition t-shirts and other apparel.
Senioritis: That's awesome! We're trying to get back into the apparel side of things as well.

Senioritis: How would you describe Pause's style?
Pause Designs: Streetwear with cartoon surrealist content.
Senioritis: Sounds pretty unique, your designs are great!

Senioritis: Any favorite colors?
Pause Designs: We don't see in colours, man. We are all equal.
Senioritis: Fair enough.

everything you ever wanted v neck
Senioritis: Righty or Left?
Pause Designs: Neither.
Senioritis: Didn't know that was possible, more power to ya.

Senioritis: Do the guys over at Pause have a favorite quote?
Pause Designs: Everything in this video.
Senioritis: Yeah buddy!! Nothin to it but to do it, we couldn't have said it better ourselves.

honourable lip fringe

Senioritis: If you could have lunch with someone famous, past or present, who would it be?
Pause Designs: How about Batman? We'd like to know what he's eating, y'know? How does he keep such a trim figure? We bet it's a lot of fiber. Maybe a steroid sandwich or two, or no carbs after 8pm, or something like that. Plus, you know the meal is going to be ritzy. The guy is a bazillionaire. And you get to meet his butler Alfred too! Not too shabby.
Senioritis: We have heard that the key to Batman's firm figure is watching the aforementioned Ronnie Coleman video 6 times each morning before going to the gym and from what we gather chasing bad guys is a pretty good cardio workout.

Senioritis: What's your favorite cartoon, from now or when you were a kid?
Pause Designs: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We always thought that playing with radioactive ooze was a bad thing, the Turltes taught us otherwise. (Andrew was totally Casey Jones for Halloween. Awesome).

Senioritis: Can't go wrong with the Turtles; we always found it interesting that they were named after Ranaissance masters. Any Casey Jones pictures?

sofa king rad

Senioritis: Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years?
Pause Designs: Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of you asking us this question!

Senioritis: Haha touche, we'll drink to that.

Senioritis: Any websites that we should know about?
Pause Designs: pausedesigns.com, pause designs on twitter, pause designs on facebook.

your wish is granted

Senioritis: Any shoutouts?
Pause Designs: Mel Smith, Chompsy, Ice Cube, Golden Horseshoe, Banana Snapple, The Hurt Locker (not the movie, the real locker), Tom Hanks (circa 1980's), Sleeping Giant Gallery, switch-blade combs, and anyone who has ever purchased one of our shirts, or said anything nice about us. You're making this dream job possible.

A big thanks to Ken, Andrew, and Eric for opening themselves up to us and our followers! Your work rocks! And a call to our readers, please check out Pause's shop for some really sweet artwork and apparel. In the words of some wise Canadians please remember: Malls suck. Support underground.

The Real World

Last week I started my first real summer job. I have worked as a camp counselor numerous times and even taught a nature class a few years ago, but I have never had a real 9-5 job where I worked in an office. This summer I have an internship with an Environmental Consulting Firm on the island. For those of you who are not green or environmentally saavy, an environmental consultant is contracted out to look at a company's facilities and make sure it complies with a plethora of rules and regulations concerning everything from proper hazardous waste disposal to making sure the new building wont effect the water table of the area. I must say that although I have been there about a week I already love it. I greatly enjoy having my own cubicle and phone extension.
While I do have my degree in Environmental Policy and Law, a perfect background for this job, I am surprised with the amount of resposibility I have been given. I am not only in charge of several projects, but I have been asked my opinion on things many a time. It seems that my education has prepared me well for my future. I was terrified to enter the workplace, being so young and the only person there straight out of college. It seems however, that my youthfulness has put me at an advantage, I am pretty up to date on the current laws and regualtions and have learned about the newest technologies and mitigation methods. It also helps that I am a master at google ;-).
While the job is a once in a lifetime experience, I must admit that I am not a fan of the set schedule, or perhaps I just need to get used to it. While at school I was able to come and go as I please and do everything on my own time schedule, there was no due date or time, but rahter I got things done at my leisure. The real world, I am learning doesn't seem to work that way. But, if this is my biggest complaint about my new summer job than I guess I am in good shape.

Unfortunately, it is pretty much my bedtime since I now need to be up at 6 to make it to work by 8. Hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of summer and getting a little more lazy with the heat.
